Allan Holdsworth show last saturday

Any of you guys make to the show at Galliger's in Huntington Beach on saturday. I was on vacation in L.A. so I went.

Chad just killed that gig. Allan played flawlessly, and Jimmy Johnson dominated.

The musicianship was incredible; although, after about the fith song, everything started to sound the same, musically that is. I love Allan's Secrets album, and I have taken a liking to some of the tracks on his others. It seemed like every song started out as a ballad or an in your face rhythmic melodic thing, and then switched betwen those two type of ideas.

I guess my tastes are changing, cause I know a couple of years ago, this type of thing was all I wanted to listen too.

Any ways, the concert still rocked, and watching Chad is a learning experience.

It's part of a lot that frustrated me about Allan's live shows eventually. It all started to get pretty one-dimensional, and it had been that way for quite some time. That aspect wasn't satisfying to me artistically, and ... Allan, he just doesn't seem to consider these things, in spite of the genius he is. It's a shame. Personally, I deeply wish he'd really try to work on something new for himself. The old band show consisting of all the old and "some new" tunes concept for standard electric trio or four-piece I'm so, so tired of hearing now from him. Shame, 'cos he has a side to him that where he has real "vision" about things. He's come out with some serious conceptual ideas, usually late at night at a bar somewhere. Pity he doesn't work harder on that side of things. Quite some time ago it all got sort of ... "old" for me, and, I guess, for a lot of his dedicated audience too.

Having said that I'm sure my old friends there played wonderfully.... and Huntington Beach, wow! I remember, years back, the old IOU band at a place called The Golden Bear a couple times. Wow, long time ago now.

Interesting post from Mr. Husband. I've only seen Holdsworth twice - first sometime around 2001 at the short lived Baked Potato on Sunset. That was with Dave Carpenter and Joel Taylor. The second time was in 2003 at the BP - this time with Joel Taylor and Ernest Tibbs. I spoke with Allan briefly after the show and he mentioned that they were going to be recording new material with Taylor and Tibbs at the time. Wonder what's become of those sessions?

I think I agree with the sort of one dimensionality of the gig, even with the stellar playing of each musician. Interesting also that Holdsworth seems to have gone back to Chad and Jimmy since Chad has moved back to LA.

Mr. Husband: I would love to have seen his gig when you did it!

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Thanks very much. Well, we had a thing together. I'm still proud of it ... certainly did span a lot of years that relationship. I actually have some really nice bootlegs I collected (or recorded) myself of some of the better ones. I doubt I ever get permission from him to make them available though.

From what I hear and understand I think Chad has been responsible for booking some of these present gigs.

I hear also Allan will release the album with Joel Taylor and Ernest Tibbs - "Snakes & Ladders" I think it may be called? I also hear he will remix the old IOU album with some of the extra tracks that got lost back in 1980. These include the original "Water On The Brain". I have an old rough-mix version on cassette and then Allan played me a different one still over the phone, so I guess there a few!!

I saw Holdsworth with Gary Husband back in like 97 or so. I don?t think Gary had not played for like 2 years or so. He just kept dropping sticks and he hit someone in the audience. It looked like he was struggling so much. But I have to give it to him he was musical that night. Either that or I had one to many drinks to make that assumption

The dropping sticks and seizing up thing. Yeah, it was always a drag when that happened. It's called basically not great technique to begin with, and trying to play well beyond my means! Not working for months on end previously was always a drag too, and this was a real frequent problem for me.

We made some music though, and it always sounded like us.

I love Holdsworth including everything Gary's on.....Gary - you would of been in the band when you came to Schenectady/Albany NY...early to mid 90's?.....I went alone to the gig and enjoyed enery second of it.

_Jeff w Toto [....or Si for that matter - never seen Toto live]
_Elvin came to town a yr & half or so b4 he passed...
_Tony, '96 Drum Super Expo [w others, including Chambers & Donati...was OTR/OOT gigging, never got to see him live]...
_Stern, Weckl, Jeff Andrews trio, '97 [it was free, & I was sicker'n a a dawg]..
_Vinnie in clinic in the early-to-mid 90s...I was in a Top 40/rock/variety band touring within state, but I was so into what was going on w gigging/my life ATT, & I'd no idea he was in town [found out about it a few daze later]...
_Weckl w CCAB[1] trio early 90s AW...I was gigging 30-40 mins from the outdoor event...they'd played under a tent or gazebo, & I found out in hindsight [few days later once again]; a guy i knew ATT basically sat "under" Daves' hats...
_Gambale trio w Joel Taylor & Fierabracci [also w Kofi Baker's fusion band] a year & half ago or so...
_Holdsworth w Husband [was OTR again] [nor also w Vinnie nor Novak...saw him w Chad, which was cool]...
